It’s hard to imagine the world of Perfume Genius – not necessarily hard to conjure the image of his fragile world, but hard to keep that image in your mind. There’s an overwhelming sense of pain in his music, accented by his ever trembling voice and minor chord depression. And, on the rare occasion that his heavy-handed piano ballads twinkle, you can’t help but think that such upbeat notes are a mere cloaking device for the frail, shivering world he lives in. This music is not for the happy-go-lucky. It’s meant for those that can appreciate the artistic quality of deep, direct emotion. It’s also important to note Perfume Genius’ home-made videos (2 of which you can see after the jump). Though they are mostly pieces of found footage or clips of very little activity, their intimacy and subtlety strangely capture the fragility of these songs.
