There’s a moment, 2 minutes and 15 seconds into this performance of “When Your Love is Safe” where a little sliver of smile splits Pat’s face in two and from that toothy chasm comes a question: is he smiling because he knows how utterly destroyed and enraptured we are, how we’re hanging on his every breath like it was our own, clinging to the present with dug in chalkboard nails? Or is he flashing back to an image of the person that this song is written for, to a place in his memory saved for translating this experience into song? I don’t much care to know the answer, I’m too grateful and too smitten, crushing like a fifth grader with a balled up love-note absorbing sweat from my palm, jealous of whoever this song is actually about.
