Braiding squids with Perfume Genius

It’s hard to imagine the world of Perfume Genius – not necessarily hard to conjure the image of his fragile world, but hard to keep that image in your mind. There’s an overwhelming sense of pain in his music, accented by his ever trembling voice and minor chord depression. And, on the rare occasion that his heavy-handed piano ballads twinkle, you can’t help but think that such upbeat notes are a mere cloaking device for the frail, shivering world he lives in. This music is not for the happy-go-lucky. It’s meant for those that can appreciate the artistic quality of deep, direct emotion. It’s also important to note Perfume Genius’ home-made videos (2 of which you can see after the jump). Though they are mostly pieces of found footage or clips of very little activity, their intimacy and subtlety strangely capture the fragility of these songs.

Video Yo-Yo

Tycho – “The Daydream”

This video is actually titled Meridian by Brian Levi Bowman, but I’m drawn to it because of the soundtrack. “The Daydream” was one of my favorite songs of 2008. The video’s time lapse footage juxtaposed with live action shots conjure the same emotional explosiveness as the song. It makes you feel like a Care Bear with fucking rainbows shooting out of your chest. Keep an eye out for more brilliant music from Tycho in the very near future.

Girls – “Hellhole Ratrace”

Our boys, Girls, have been receiving some well-deserved attention in the past few months. As San Franciscans, Yours Truly could not be more proud of our hometown cohorts. This video by Aaron Brown documents a night of youthful play with friends and strangers where nothing is more important than having a good time. We don’t want to die without shaking up a leg or two.

Video yo-yo

Jigga pulls into a darkened alley in the back of a big body Benz chauffeured by none other than Lyor Cohen, the scariest heeb in the record business. The two salute, then Jay ascends to a blank warehouse space in the freight elevator as suspense builds towards the first notes of NO ID’s horn hungry lesson in dissonance.

What I’ve learned from this video… Jay is cool enough to have a secret handshake with Harvey Keitel, he doesn’t give a shit about a hit, you can find him at a back room poker game with a stack of cash that could choke a llama, he can cross up Lebron on the court and make statements like “This is sinatra at the opera, bring a blonde, preferably with a fatass who can sing a song” without a touch of arrogance or irony.

Hit the jump for more videos from Dirty Projectors, Maxwell, Drake and Blitzen Trapper.
