Mac DeMarco

YT just can't get enough of mad Mac

Yours Truly and Mac DeMarco have done this dance before. First in NYC, then again in Austin, and now, across the sea in Barcelona. We met Mac backstage on the afternoon he was set to play the Pitchfork stage at Primavera. He and his girlfriend Kiki were cuddled up on the couch, lounging like fat cats or long lizards, intertwined like a warm pretzel. I asked Mac if he was ready for the shoot. Of course he was, but what was he going to play? I answered, “remember that song you wrote for Adult Swim?” Silence. Head scratches free loose dandruff. “Yes, I do remember, but I don’t remember how it goes or have any idea how to play it.” Some background: “Young Blood” the song Mac wrote for the Adult Swim Singles Series was written after a long and fruitful Patrick Swayze movie binge, and its probably the best thing to ever come out of a Swayze marathon in recorded history. Mac grabbed the guitar, searching for the chords, wiling his fingers to remember their shape. I found an mp3 of the song and let him listen as we walked to a park nearby the festival grounds. Mac and Kiki walked hand in hand, Mac re-learning the song as we walked. By the time we hit the hill at the top of the park, he had it down.
