How do you deal with all these fake ass rappers walking around talking like they’ve seen 1/16 of the struggle that you’ve seen, done a spec of the dirt that you’ve done and had to deal with half the bullshit that you’ve overcome to get this far? Is that why you came with a cut like ‘Fuck the World’ because at this point you’ve proven that not only do you not need their help, but you’re better off without em? Well Fred, I’m with you, Fuck em! They’d rather dress you like a peacock and have you auto-crooning candy cane ass hooks of hollowed out half-truths than telling your story the way it’s meant to be told. So FUCK THE WORLD, because the world doesn’t know you, and unless you tell them exactly who you are without reservation, then they never will.

In this third edition of Yours Truly & The Smoking Section’s 3:16 series (check out J. Cole & Pac Div) we turn our attention to two of the baddest beat bandits under the sun: Freddie Gibbs and Pill. These dudes spit that gritty, dirt under the nails, bricks in the trunk, don’t visit us at home hip-hop that harkens back to a time when it still felt good to be a gansta. Act accordingly.

Twenty ten just sounds better than two thousand and nine; with its built-in abbreviation and alliteration, it’s easily the baddest nickname since ’99. It even looks cooler on paper; the zeros separated symmetrically by 1 look just like midi code and if you remove the 2 you’ve got the beginnings of a great cartoon face — see the eyes (zeros) and nose (1) in 010…?

Besides, 2011 is gonna suck on account of the impending apocalypse. Most folks’ll prolly spend every spare second collectin bottled water, duc tape & SPAM so whatta you say we treat these next 361 like they’re our last and dance like there’s no one looking?

YT: So Freddie, where’d you grow up?

Freddie G: I was born in a small town with big dreams, Pops told me as a child I would do big things. But I’m from Gary Indiana homie, so I keep the hammers on me. Quick to clap a phony, splatter his brain like macaroni.

Sounds heavy. So did the reality of Gary hit you early?
My attitude is shady, from the hood that made me. My parents had to work, so my grandmama raised me. And you know eventually she got too tired to chase me, so I jumped up off the porch and hit the streets running crazy

Were there any other options?
If u been in my position you probably know what I’m going through, rob,. steal, kill, whenever your bill’s overdue.

So how did you discover the alternative?
Pimpin’ aint easy but my grandaddy he showed me the ropes, my uncle had me packing them pistols and hustlin’ coke, this ain’t a joke the results of my love for that dolla dolla got your baby mama coppin’ my product in Guatemala

So how does all this influence your writing?
When I rhyme I aint telling you lies, I seen plenty of niggas meet they demise right in front of my eyes, I can take you to the ghetto where they pack heavy metal, got the crack on the stove right next to granny’s tea kettle

When did you start taking rap seriously?
Since the age of 19 I been crushing niggaz rap dreams

And has it helped you with the ladies? I bet you’re girl’s fine as fuck.

This ain’t the way I wanna be, this ain’t how I wanna live, I dream about having kids, but I’m afraid that as they grow they won’t see they daddy live, cuz daddy is problematic, daddy got bad habits, hopefully when I’m older I’ll look back and I laugh at it, but now I’m a deal with it, get my heat and kill with it, I’m droppin any nigga in the way of my meal ticket

Alright, any final thoughts?
Whether niggaz know it or not yet, my shit about to knock on every hood every project, its east 17th put it down for my set, so blame it on the crackers why my album ain’t dropped yet

What you don’t see….

Freddie was pretty twisted on Henny, Fat Tire and Swisher by the time this shoot actually happened.
After we wrapped, before taking off to Keelay‘s house, Freddie fell asleep sitting up on the studio couch.
Freddie drives slow homie, coming across the bay bridge I swear he never went above 40 mph.
In between takes, Freddie worked on his Luther Vandross impression, but had to quit because Pimp C already did that.
