Momma said there’d be days like this, there’d be days like this my Momma said. Momma’s always right, and when she is, everybody wins. For the finale of yours truly’s sessions in my room, The Head and The Heart and a bus-load of new friends gathered round a trio of trees in the courtyard out front for a foot-stomping, hand clapping, soul solidifying rendition of “Lost in My Mind.”

Fading Parade, the forthcoming album from San Francisco’s Papercuts, is made for wrapping up in thick blankets during the coldest nights. There are layers despair and yearning, but it’s also bundled between moments of solace that act as those down comforters on dreary days. It’s chicken soup, or in the case of this video, red wine with friends that warms the heart and soul.

For Andy

This past October, a cherished member of the Sub Pop family, Andy Kotowicz, died from injuries suffered in a car accident. Although Yours Truly did not know Andy personally, our friends at Sub Pop, from both staff and roster, have expressed how deeply they’ll miss their dear friend. Yours Truly was told that “Must Be In A Good Place Now” by Bobby Charles was one of Andy’s favorite songs. So, this one’s for for you, Andy.Andy left behind his wife Jocelyn and young daughter Anna and memorial fund has been set up to support his family. A charity auction is currently in progress and features some rare and collectible items from all walks of the music life. Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo rolled through San Francisco recently, popped into Different Fur Studios, and gave Yours Truly a live version of “What’s In It For?” from their self-titled debut album, which is still gaining steam. Check out Avi’s guitar chops and Sheridan’s dope Japandroids shirt. They may seem young, but they clearly know their stuff.

I wish every working musician was more like Kelley Stoltz. Here’s a dude who works really hard, does literally everything himself (writing, recording, album art), loves his job, doesn’t take himself too seriously, and inspires consistent belly laughter in all those around him. Spending three days with him this summer in San Francisco was too much fun and taught Yours Truly to take pride in the things we work the hardest for. Thanks for letting us tag-along.

The two pieces you see here are a collaboration between Yours Truly’s Eugene Cheung and Papercuts’ Jason Quever, who recorded and mixed the audio directly to tape at his home, The Pan American Recording Studio, where “Once We Walked In The Sunlight” and “Future Primitive” were filmed.

Fruit Bats

We should record in here,” said Eric Johnson, the man behind Fruit Bats, as he admired the resonance within the cellars of the Gundlach-Bundschu winery. His reaction was one of surprise, previously unaware of the aural power that the cellars permitted. There was excitement in the air and spirits were high. We sat around the table and drank good wine, talking about their amazing new album The Ruminant Band. Eric stepped out for a moment as the rest of the band topped off their glasses of red and white. Then, all of sudden, we heard music. Eric strolled in with his guitar and the band burst into a rocking rendition of “The Hobo Girl.” The sound in the room was too good to stop there, so they sipped a bit more wine, then eased their way into “Flamingo.” In this version, Eric’s voice is so powerful it could give God goosebumps. In fact, it’s so powerful that if you weren’t aware of your love for Fruit Bats, you will be now. It was a beautiful evening filled with great wine and great music. What more could we ask for.
